17+1 Rounds of 9mm in a 1911 | American Classic XB Tabletop Review

Tactical Tupperware may be the way of the future, but the ergonomics and crisp trigger of a 1911 can’t be denied. Perhaps it’s the handsome lines of Browning’s design or the reassuring heft of a steel frame in hand, but regardless, it’s tough to be a handgunner and not appreciate the 1911. Fortunately, appreciation for a classic doesn’t require ignoring evolution.

More than 100 years of engineering and manufacturing advancements have taken place since the advent of the 1911. Absolutist may try to ignore them, but a modern 1911 doesn’t have to be unreliable, chambered in .45acp, or even single-stack. The craftsmen at Metro Arms understand this and have created a piece to be admired on the range or on a proverbial podium of a local competition. As you can see in the video the XB is very well made. Fitment is tight and accurate and I’m betting the shooting will be too. I’ll get the XB out to the range soon for the standard battery of tests. For those unfamiliar with GBGuns the process begins with a full-magazine +1 for essential reliability, then I run a variety of different loads through the gun. Between bullet profiles, projectile weights, powder blends, and case materials not all ammo runs well in all guns. This, “What’s for Dinner?” test is intended to identify what the gun will and won’t eat. After that a quick field accuracy test using Nosler Match ammunition which is really more of where I gather thoughts on the gun than it is a test of the gun.

Grand Power’s Stribog Carbine Pistol from Eagle Imports

Eagle Imports has been importing the Grand Power family of firearms into the United States for a little while now and the overall opinion is that the Slovakian built pistols feature good quality and ergonomics at a competitive price point. Our own writer Graham Baates has featured several article on the variants he has been able to get his hands on. Well today Eagle Imports has announced another pistol in the line, the Stribog. This pistol looks remarkably like sub machine guns offered by Swiss firearms maker B&T and their APC9 chambered in, you guessed it 9×19. Since I don’t have the gun in my hands just yet I will let the press release speak for itself.

Grand Power Q1S from Eagle Imports Announced

If you have been reading the site for any length of time then you have no doubt seen that we have reviewed quite a few pistols from Grand Power and the overall opinion is that they are great entry level guns. The common misconception about the Grand Power is that it is made in Turkey, which is not true at all. In fact the pistols are made in the neighboring country of Slovakia, a country that many of us older Americans remember as half of the former country of Czechoslovakia. Reloaded: The Grand Power K-100 Pistol

Grand Power has been called the best pistol you’ve never heard of. As a fan of their guns that has been raving about them for years I take offense to that. As you’ve seen in our article on the Q100 I have a small collection of Grand Power pistols and that’s for good reason, they’re awesome. Recently we took the K-100 out for a range revisit and reminder of why we like the gun.

The K-100 is the work-horse of the lineup. Duty-gun sized including the capacity and user comfort that comes with the sedans of the pistol world. Specs can be found on the product page.

If you’re not familiar with Grand Power one of the things that makes them different is the rotating barrel. Forget the claim about low bore axis, I think even Remington claimed that with their RP9. The real benefit of the rotating barrel is the absence of the lock-up clunk. Everyone who’s shot a Glock knows what I’m talking about. Tilting barrels require right-angle pieces of steel to pass over one another. This increases perceived recoil with abrupt shifts in weight and spikes in linear energy transfer. That simply doesn’t happen with a rotating barrel.

Why don’t more handguns feature this? Cost. More machining is required and to an arguably higher degree of accuracy for the Grand Power design. This means it costs more to make, and often that cost is passed to the consumer. I’m okay with that because Grand Power pistols are not meant for those wanting the quick and easy. Grand Power is the line shooters graduate to once they’ve learned enough to appreciate the finer things in a gun.

Speaking of finer things, a steel chassis inside the frame and four back straps that actually change the feel of the gun have been Grand Power features for years not months. Watch: Bersa TPR9C Alloy Framed Double Stack

Bersa is perhaps best-known for their Thunder 380 series. What hasn’t been so-well known in the US is their other offerings in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. The single-stack BP9CC is one of my personal carry guns, though the trigger is so superb I recommend it only for the well-trained. At SHOT show 2018 Bersa and Eagle Imports revealed their newest offerings in the double-stack field including the TPR9C.

What peaked my interest in the BP9C are the features packed into such a small handgun. Generally we have to sacrifice features to get a small package. That is not true with the BP9C. More capacity and controls than most other offerings, and the joy of a hammer-fired DA/SA trigger set the TRP9C apart. While ultra-light handguns have been en vogue, the Bersa has an alloy frame. As a frequent shooter I’m looking forward to that. Alloy frames are only a touch heavier to carry, yet tend to offer better balance in the hand and at the range. This new pistol will of course be put through its paces on the range. We’ll test a variety of loads from 65gr up to 165gr for reliability and as always shoot a quick group with Nosler 115gr Match to see how it performs accuracy-wise.
