Bluetti Handsfree 2 Review: The Ultimate Power Backpack for Off-Grid Adventurers

Recently I was given the opportunity to try out the Bluetti Handsfree 2 Backpack Power Station for The Loadout Room.

I’ve used just about every kind of backpack there is over just about every kind of terrain. Before it arrived, I wondered how it could possibly be any different or better than what I’d already used. I mean, a backpack is a backpack, right? Not exactly.

The Bluetti Handsfree 2 backpack power station is an all-in-one solution for outdoor enthusiasts and digital nomads like yours truly. Designed for extended trips, it combines a versatile 60-liter backpack with a 700W/512Wh portable power station, making it suitable for powering multiple devices over 3-5 days. With this model, Bluetti aims to simplify outdoor power needs by integrating energy storage into a wearable, user-friendly backpack. I think they have succeeded nicely.

Charging Capabilities and Port Configuration

The Handsfree 2 stands out with its robust charging options. It features five output ports, including an AC outlet, two 100W USB-C ports, and two USB-A ports, allowing for simultaneous charging of various devices. Whether you’re powering a laptop, camera, or drone, the backpack’s side-access charging ports let you plug in without needing to remove the battery. This setup makes charging convenient during activities like hiking or biking.

Turbocharging and Solar Compatibility

Charging the Handsfree 2 is efficient, thanks to Turbocharging technology that reaches 80% in just 45 minutes and full capacity in under 1.5 hours. If you’re a tad impatient like I am, this makes a ton of difference. I mean, who wants to sit around all day waiting for a battery to charge? Not me. No need to do that here. Charging with the optional solar panels only takes 2 hours. If need be you can charge it from the ports in your vehicle as well.

For those venturing off the grid, it supports solar panel integration, which can extend battery life by up to 30%. The power station’s smart solar charging system automatically adjusts to varying sunlight conditions, making it a reliable choice for remote expeditions. I didn’t have the panels to try for this review, and that’s too bad; I think they would have really added to the experience. Portable solar panels today are leaps ahead of what they were just a couple of years ago.

It would have been the easiest thing in the world for the people at Bluetti to throw their battery pack into a bargain backpack to save a buck, but I’m glad they didn’t do that. Actually, it’s quite a nice heavy bag with waterproofed zippers, tons of nooks and crannies for storage, and the Bluetti name embroidered across the front in large white letters.

Battery Technology and Safety Features

Powered by automotive-grade LiFePO4 battery cells, the Handsfree 2 offers over 4,000 charging cycles and a lifespan of up to 10 years. The integrated BLUETOPUS AI-BMS (Battery Management System) adds an extra layer of safety, protecting against overcharging and other hazards. These features make it a dependable choice for everyday and emergency scenarios.

The battery pack itself weighs about 16.5 lbs. Dimensions are 12″x4.1″x15.2, and it can be discharged from -4°F to 104°F. Whether you live in Fairbanks or Florida, you’re good to go.

Pricing and Value

At $399, the Bluetti Handsfree 2 backpack delivers substantial value by combining portable energy storage with a multifunctional outdoor backpack. Optional upgrades, like pairing with a 120W solar panel for an extra $200, further enhance its utility, making it an attractive choice for adventurers seeking reliable power solutions. I’ve paid north of $500 bucks for a 60 liter backpack without a battery pack in it so this is a pretty good deal.

One other thing that made me smile is the 5-year warranty and lifetime customer support.
