Does Barrel Length Really Matter ? It’s a question that has been brought up many times over the years but, what is fact and what is fiction? There are dozens of places you can go on the internet and various forums and hear all the pseudo science behind the relation between velocities and bullet drop. I’m not saying that the science isn’t real more of what I am saying is that seldom times does anyone have statistical data to back up the claims. The needed resources to set up an experiment that accurately tests the various theories at work in this equation is often times expensive and labor intensive. So its a good thing that the creative and patient men and women behind the Small Arms Defense Journal have both the patience and money to attempt to hopefully solve this issue once and for all.
Who is Small Arms Defense Journal ?
The Small Arms Defense Journal made its debut at the LAAD Trade show in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2009. The publication and web site focuses on topics and ideas that involve all forms of small arms for the Law Enforcement, Armed Security and Defense Industries. They also profile new companies and technologies that are emerging from all corners of the globe. In our opinion The Small Arms Defense Journal consistently offers its readers a professional and unbiased evaluation of the products and companies they highlight. Their reputation is one of the reasons we felt comfortable curating this article and bringing it to you to help shed light on the debates that revolve around the issues of barrel length, velocity and accuracy.
The tests performed during these field trials used a system that allowed the engineers to shoot, test and measure accuracy and velocities from barrels ranging in length from 24″ all the way down to as short at 7″. In order to maintain as much of the scientific method as possible The Small Arms Defense Journal used standard 55 grain M855 Nato that was manufactured in 2009 from the Lake City Ammunition Plant.
