I’ve tried many different brands of supplements over the years, beginning back in the 1990s. When I was deployed to Okinawa for 6 months, if we were not training there was not much else to do other than workout and go snorkeling. Over that 6 month deployment, I made sure to eat three meals a day to maximize the benefits of natural food intake. On top of that, I also consumed 1 serving per day of a supplement called Weight Gainer 3000. That added an additional 3000 calories on top of my meals. Combine that with a regular workout and I gained 20lbs in muscle weight during that deployment.
Since then, I’ve been through numerous other supplements depending on what my goals were at the time. I’m now 45 and my goal is to live as long as possible while retaining my strength and mobility. With those goals in mind, I’ve settled on two specific brands that have shown me noticeable improvements. Those brands are Bubs Naturals and Tailwind Nutrition.
Bubs Naturals (stay young, recover faster and sleep better)
Bubs Naturals Collagen protein, the fountain of youth, comes unflavored so that you can mix it in the beverage of your choice. I was told I could mix it in water, coffee and all types of juices. I’ve heard other companies claim you could mix their protein in coffee, but when I tried it became very clumpy no matter how much I tried to stir it in. So needless to say the first beverage I chose to mix Bubs Naturals into was my morning cup of coffee. I stirred it in for maybe 10 seconds and to my surprise, it was 100% dissolved (no clumps and no residue). I proceeded to drink my cup of coffee and I am happy to report it did not alter the taste at all or the texture. When I was finished there was absolutely no residue. I can confidently say that Bubs Naturals is hands down the best protein I’ve used to date. The serving size is two scoops daily, so with that said I have two cups of coffee, one scoop in each.
Tailwind Nutrition (Endurance Fuel for all day)
I’ve been using Tailwind Nutrition products for several months now and can attest to the great taste and gut-friendly digestion. There are two common issues that I have personally experienced in the past when using both pre and post recovery drink mixes. First is that they don’t dissolve very well in water, leaving both clumps and a nasty film inside your bottle. Second, they don’t digest very easily causing stomach issues. Tailwind Nutrition has addressed both issues and I can confidently say it does work.
Both the Endurance Fuel and Rebuild mix perfectly leaving no clumps and no residue in my water bottle when its empty. The taste of both the Endurance fuel and the Rebuild are really good making it easy to consume pre and post my workouts and runs.
Want something a little more natural? Try peanut butter. Just two tablespoons of peanut butter provide muscle-building protein and 16 grams of healthy fats. I usually have apple slices with two tablespoons of peanut butter with my coffee in the morning. It’s a great kick start to the morning.
With all that said, my daily regimen is as follows:
Two cups of coffee each morning with a scoop of Bubs in each. Prior to my workout and during I’m drinking a water bottle with Tailwind Endurance Fuel. Immediately following my workout I drink a water bottle of Tailwind Recover. Other than staying hydrated throughout the day, that’s it. Pretty simple.
In the Bourne Legacy movie, Jeremy Renner has to take his ‘chems’ on a regular basis to sustain his superhuman performance both physically and mentally. Those supposed ‘chems’ keep him at the top of his game for the operations he’s tasked with. Obviously taking chems is not a realistic option, but the above choices provide a more natural approach to superhuman performance.
