“Captain Phillips” movie review
Oct 6, 2013, I took my oldest son to the movies and we watched the early showing of Captain Phillips, it was directed by Paul Greengrass.’ Film. The movie opens everywhere on Oct. 11 —it is by far the most gripping based-on-fact film so far this year. Director Paul Greengrass took a nonfiction book into a high-tension action pack drama.
Tom Hanks played Captain Phillips with a wife (Catherine Keener) and they live in Vermont with their two kids in college. It takes place in March 2009; Phillips takes a job as a Captain of a cargo vessel from Oman to Kenya. Their course takes them around the Horn of Africa, which is the area held by Somalia pirates.
Soon after, Captain Phillips takes his cargo ship around the Horn of Africa where he has several hundreds of miles to go before he reaches his port. This gives an opportunity for the Somalia pirates to attack Captain Phillips ship. Phillips seems to his crew a very hard man, all work and no play, stages a practice run for his crew to see if they can handle pirates coming aboard. All of this was brought on after receiving an email about piracy from his company he works for.
As the crew sets up for the drill, they are soon attacked by two skiffs carrying Somali men with guns. Phillips does several drills with the ship and a couple of fake radio calls buys a little time, but the pirates are able to board the ship.
The Somalis Pirate Captain Muse (Barkhad Abdi) is driven by proving himself to everyone because his is only known by his tribe as “skinny” and people believe he is a coward. Muse makes it aboard the ship and quickly takes control. Phillips orders his crew to hide out in the engine room until they can get help by the United States Navy. The ship is only carrying $30,000 dollars in cash and no weapons in which Phillips try’s to offer several times to Muse — But Muse is hoping for millions — confusion and violence break out as the crew fights back and takes the pirate’s Captain hostage and try to exchange him for Captain Phillips, but the pirates take Phillips and flee in a protected metal lifeboat.
As a tense standoff between the two captains, the pirates try to fight for control of the situation as the Navy SEALs bear down to save Phillips, who’s at the end of his rope. This movie has it all, action, drama, truth and above all suspense. This is a must see movie and you will get your money’s worth. Enjoy Captain Phillips and check your local listing for Showtime’s on Oct 11th. Awesome Movie
Until next time
